Refugees, asylum seekers in Italy increased by 143% – The Republic

Rome – It swells the river of refugees directed in Italy: asylum seekers in 2014 more than doubled (+ 143%). It is a record in Europe, where the average is 44%. Italy is among the countries with the most asylum applications, after Germany and Sweden. But in the relationship between residents and applicants are under the EU average. This is shown by the latest Eurostat data.

The wave of displaced people. The number of asylum seekers in the EU in 2014 has reached a record of about 626mila, registering an increase of 44% compared to 2013, amounting to 191 thousand more people. The highest share, 202,700 (32%), was recorded in Germany. Sweden followed 81,200 (13%); Italy 64 600 (10%), France, 62,800 (10%) and Hungary (42 800, 7%).

The Italian record. The asylum seekers in Italy in 2014 are more than doubled, + 143% over the previous year. The main increase in the EU, followed by Hungary and Denmark 126%, 105%. In relation to the population, the number of asylum seekers highest recorded in Sweden (8.4 applicants per thousand inhabitants), followed by Hungary (4.3); Austria (3.3); Malta (3.2); Denmark (2.6) and Germany (2.5). In contrast, the lowest rates were observed in Portugal (0), Slovakia (0.1) and Romania (0.1). Most applicants are Syrian (122,800), 20% of the total, followed by Afghans (41,300) 7%.

The concern of the Interior Ministry . Eurostat data on applications for asylum in Italy “can replicate in 2015, the situation is exceptional as much as that of 2014″. By the Ministry of Interior are leaked that “we had to double the fees that evaluate requests, increased from 20 to 40 and all operating full-time. It is still a concern for the next wave of arrivals, spring has begun”.
