“To really get to know the sea, you must first know your soul and your heart.” In this sentence there is the essence of Enzo maiorca, the syracusan who has marked an era and rewritten the limit of the diving in apnea, and broke several times the world record. his first mask was a protection gas, which was recycled in the post-war period. That boy grew up to bread and sea had courage and it didn’t take long to prove it. For him to break down every human limit and digging a furrow in the history of the dives were the things the most natural in the world. The career of Enzo has been marked by record: variable weight went from -45 meters, in 1960, and it improved to 17 times, the last one was in 1988, when he arrived to tap one amazing -101 at the ripe old age (at least for a human being subjected to an effort so intense) of 57 years. The constant weight remain graven in the history of this discipline the -55 metres of 1979. “The sea was my second home – he repeated, with pride and nostalgia – I am grateful for that.” After having abandoned the practice in racing, Mallorca has embraced the environmental commitment, which over time has become his new passion, defended by a senator between 1994 and ’96, in a legislature incomplete. Then he became the inspirer of the sign of the associations ‘Sos ‘ Syracuse’, that campaigns for the protection of the archaeological areas, but also of landscape, marine and not. In 2006, he received the gold medal of merit Marina for the exploits of the sports and the defense of the environment. “It was a Greek fisherman – revealed, in a day – that explained to me how the brain and the hearts of men were much more unknown of the deep sea”. Maybe it was just then that Mallorca has believed in the impossible and he made it happen. her biggest opponent was the French-born, Shanghai (and who committed suicide at the Elbe), Jacques Mayol: the duel between the two inspired ‘Le grand bleu’, a film that Luc Besson, made in 1988, but that came out in Italy only in 2002. Was the same Mallorca to oppose the screening of the film, because ledeva his image. Majorca, he learned to swim at four years old, “but I had a great fear of the sea”, as he liked to remember. “A day – revealed – a doctor friend showed me an article in which he spoke of a new record of depth at -41 m, ripped Bucher by Falco and Novelli. It was the summer of 1956 and I was strongly influenced by that feat so bold”. Thus was born the tale of the ‘king of the deep’. Mallorca snatched the title of the man who was able to go more in depth and, in the year of the Olympics in Rome, crowned their dream: to touch -45 meters and cross the threshold of the brazilian Santarelli, who, in September of the same year, took back, however, of the primacy, reaching -46; lasted little, because in November, Mallorca is brought to -49. He remained at the top for 16 years, until 1976, then stopped until 1988, when, for their daughters Patrizia and Rossana (both famous in the world for a series of world record in free diving), reached the last record: -101 meters.
this Morning, Majorca has crossed the last threshold at the end of a life full of interests and with a passionate love for the sea. Mallorca has left the world at the age of 85 in his Syracuse; as is the case when he dies a poet, to migrate elsewhere, to the discovery of new boundaries. His remains, however, nun’existence unique.
“the Safeguard of the sea and the coasts is a deal that affects all of us – his motto -. I can only protest loudly against those who wish to scuttle areas of great beauty”.
and Then hung the fins to nail to enjoy the last years, after having experienced the deafening silence of the abyss. To one like him, and the silence has never been scared of.
