Farewell to Mario Pirani, journalist and writer among the founders of the Republic – The Messenger

The journalist and writer Mario Pirani died last night in Rome. He had 89 years.

Pirani was born in Rome and had participated in the founding of the Republic, of which he became Deputy Director, along with Eugenio Scalfari. Previously, after the experiences with Patrol and The Day, had been enrolled in the Italian Communist Party (which moved away after the invasion of Hungary in 1956) and officer of Eni, which in the sixties had sent to Algeria .

Among his duties, he was also director of L’Europeo, from 1979 to 1980. In 1995 he won the Premiolino. Had published with The Mill in 1989, “The charm of Nazism. The case Jenninger: a controversy about the history”; in 1993 “The future of the economy seen by major Italian economists” (Knopf); in 2004, “You broke the third world war? Democracies between pacifism and defense” (Knopf), and finally, in 2010, “It could be worse. Half a century of reasonable illusions” (Knopf).

” With the disappearance of Mario Pirani Italy loses a man of great wisdom and balance. An item that has never had the fear to express their views with conviction, even when they were uncomfortable and not in line with public opinion predominant. ” So in a statement the mayor of Rome, Ignazio Marino. “To his wife and his family today express my most sincere condolences – adds the mayor – A Mario, I had known for many years, I tied a strong friendship and great respect. I was lucky enough to attend often and confront him when, in my parliamentary work, I dealt with the National Health Service. With him, a distinguished Roman citizen, I shot so many places in our city, so it has always had great care and infinite love. “

” The news of the death of Mario Pirani strikes me and grieves deeply. We were bound by a friendship old and resistant to any difficulties or momentary misunderstanding. In fact the proximity, I would say the interpenetration between our ways of thinking and feeling were very strong in decades, “he wrote in a message former President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano. “They flock in my mind right now – Pirani – countless memories, including one that was particularly dear to him, the first meetings between us in my father’s house at the beginning of our common political militancy. He was a free spirit and critical even in the ranks of the Communist Party, which broke away without ever become its opponent and a detractor, but preserving itself and openly defending the core better than historical experience. As a journalist, a writer, as an interlocutor in a thousand debates, has left an unmistakable sign of intellectual honesty and consistency. And those who knew him best and loved him has left an unforgettable impression of his humanity. My most affectionate hug goes to Claudia that has been lovingly and generously next to the last. “
