Police evacuate migrants from cliff at Ventimiglia – Reuters Italy


       

Ventimiglia (Reuters) – The police started to evacuate most of the immigrants camped on the border with France, as EU ministers meet in Luxembourg discuss immigration emergency.

There are about 300 migrants who have gathered near Ventimiglia in the past five days.


       

Some of immigrants – mainly from Sudan, Eritrea and Somalia – have resisted. Many of them have already been rejected by France.


       

Italy is seeking the assistance of the EU to meet emergency migration from North Africa. According to official estimates, this year arrivals have already been roughly 57,000.


       

After the police took a bus load of migrants, about 60 others remained on the rocks near the border.


       

Two police officers explained that migrants are taken to the train station and that they are provided food and health care.


       

“We are helpless and hopeless and at the mercy of the police,” he told Reuters one of the migrants, Mustafari, claiming to be from Darfur.


       

Mustafari said to have taken six times a train to France hoping to reach Sweden, to be dismissed on time in Italy. He spent all his money – 200 euro – in railway tickets and food. More …
