Rutelli: “Pannella? It was a minority but played all over the country “- BBC

After his death, we report the honor they deserve the Three Revolutions of Marco Pannella. They will remain forever. Will remain to our Italy, and not only.

the first revolution: civil rights. In a country that has not known the Protestant transformation and lived episodic waves of bourgeois Enlightenment, the radical bet has a historical importance: to understand Italians who were far ahead of a bigoted conservatism; and he left still communist that could not be the renunciation to the advancement of civil liberties the terrain of compromise with the Christian Democrats. So, thanks to the radicals led by Pannella Italy was discovered tolerant and modern. And the Catholics did not need to wait for a South American pope and Jesuit called Francesco to see combat bigotry that prevented a divorce to those who could no longer live with the person you married, or allowed only clandestine abortions, or prevented – with shame – to be acknowledged and respected living with a person of the same sex. The civil rights campaigns, namely: my political conscience objection, but my aim is to get a rule that is valid for everyone. Here is the liberal-democratic nature of the Italian post-war radicalism: a small minority who plays and, at times, driving the vast majority of the country.

The nonviolent Revolution. In our country, the civil conflict between fascists and anti-fascists had not transformed into real and open war; but a creeping persistence of political violence had long continued to disfigure our society. For ideology, too much of the left (and of the right), without joining the terrorist extremism, considered violence an inevitable element, at some point the political and social conflict. Adopting and adapting a distant cultural experience, and that of the Satyagraha of Gandhi’s civil disobedience, Pannella turns the tables. We can say that the radicals – even assuming the face of Gandhi in the symbol of the Party – have helped a generation to fight extremism and destructive idols to get out of the “years of lead.” The campaigns against world hunger, humanistic defense of the sacredness of human life, have perhaps marked the most singular moment, although it has not resulted in success. Sure, you can find other very original features, in the 60 years of the radical-pannelliana each other: the obsession for the functioning of the institutions; the birth of a non-ideological environmentalism; the federalist Europeanism and pro-Western; anti-party politics campaigns (in the wake of Maranini); a freedom of deployment sometimes unconventional, but functional objectives to preserve and political identity (with a shut himself in the end in a small group from growing domestic harshness; but how can we fail to Pannella and the radical consistency, disinterest in power, a rare personal honesty?).

The Third Revolution and visionary, however, was another in my opinion: the Transnational . Born from there, 27 years ago, my decision to leave the Radical Party to continue its efforts in the Italian public life (but never stop being grateful for the outstanding training that lasts radical ranks had allowed me, as to so many others). Pannella had known in advance what marks disruptively our time: globalization, which makes a poor fight only within national boundaries – for example, human rights, the environment, or to the freedom of expression on the platforms shared. The total budget for this choice deserves to be discussed; but it also marked extraordinary results, the mobilizations against the death penalty and the establishment of the International Criminal Court, the struggle against all physical and symbolic Lager that our age once again (until the decision to make dominant, in Italy, the radical mobilization for decency in the prison restriction of personal freedom).

“I Pannella wanted to be, “he told me in late August of two years ago . And it was until the last day, with the incredible procession of so many of us in his house, to accompany the idea that the disease, such as affection, friendship, awaiting the end they are a part of all-politics that existence. Marco was the motto Bergson who has most loved: “The duration is the shape of things.” The innovative flow of ideas, and their persistence, was the form of his being Pannella.
