the phone records are the track that could address the Italian investigation into the murder of Julius Regeni. An opportunity that could confirm the hypothesis that behind the assassination of twenty-eight researcher in Cairo, can hide the hand of police officers or Egyptian security apparatuses.

For this, the public prosecutor of Rome back to ask the acts of investigation to cairote judicial authorities. The chief prosecutor Giuseppe Pignatone has put pen to paper and come up with an international rogatory letter with which it seeks to acquire the records of Dokky cell phone, the area where Julius disappeared on 25 January, and the highway Cairo-Alexandria where it was found the body of the seeker on February 3. Another attempt by the prosecutor of Rome, after the constant promises of “collaboration” that, in fact, have never been fulfilled. Because beyond a small dossier of eighty pages, among other things with incomplete acts, nothing has been provided Italians investigators. In fact, the Egyptian authorities are not cooperating. The question is that this ‘closure’ is dictated by a direct involvement of the security apparatus, as among other things the Italian investigation has suggested. Because the state there are still data: the date of the disappearance of Julius, on January 25, the anniversary of the 2013 revolution; the torture suffered by the poor researcher of Udine, very similar to those that, according to the associations of human rights, would be carried out by cairote police forces; studies Regeni was making to the University of Cambdridge, a didactic work on independent trade unions, organizations strongly opposed by the government of Al-Sisi and marginalized by a government circular. The headlamps are focused on meetings that carried out the independent union, that Julius attended to the study that was taking place for the Cambridge Maha Abdelrahman Professor, considered “dissident” of the government. The fear is that there may have been street vendors – hired in many cases by the authorities as informants – who may have provided information on the young researcher. His presence would be noticed, so that at the meeting of Independent Trade Unions of 11 December last year, somebody takes a picture to the researcher. Hence he was born the misunderstanding that may have brought the security apparatus to misunderstand the role of Regeni.

Today the Foreign Minister, Paolo Gentiloni, will meet the ambassador in Cairo Maurizio Massari, recalled to Rome for consultations after the failure of the summit between Italians and Egyptians investigators last Friday. The meeting would have the aim of studying new measures to accentuate the pressure on the Cairo authorities to cooperate in the investigation. The lure of Massari in Italy is in fact only the first step among those that our country can implement, in an escalation in the latter case providing for the complete rupture of relations. This is an interim measure and eventually revoked, forcing Egypt to do in-depth evaluation of its real intention to cooperate fully with the investigation on Regeni death, but that might not be enough, requiring other measures not only symbolic and instead able to have immediate effects on cultural exchanges, economic relations and political and diplomatic relations between the two countries.

“Regeni was killed with obvious signs of torture,” said the president of the Chamber, Laura Boldrini . “I think – he concluded – that European citizenship should be also exercised in this case. When a European citizen is treated in this way, I believe that the Europe of rights must reiterate all along the request for truth about a case like this. “
