It ended in tragedy today not far from the Cortina ski holiday of a Dutch family. One of the couple’s three children, 24, was killed in a massive landslide (500 meters in front, 200 in length) which detached under Mount Averau, on the slopes of Passo Giau, while he was off-piste.
Another died there was in Cuneo, in the Valle Stura. It is one of 47 years that ski touring English, with other companions, he was saved by an avalanche thanks to safety systems, but was dragged by the force of impact against a tree, dying instantly.
A third person, a forty of the province of Vicenza, died in Trentino due to an avalanche . The man was facing, in the company of four other friends, were unharmed, an off-track on Mount Agaro, in the resort Chalet Paradiso, on the mountainside overlooking the Valsugana. The fate instead he deliberately challenged the young Dutchman, who with his father and brothers was skiing in the district of Col Gallina-5 Torri, near Passo Giau. Despite the warning launched by the Civil Protection, which estimated today between grade 3 and 4 (marked) the avalanche risk, could not resist to jump into the fresh snow. Just below the refuge Averau cut right off the track, followed by two family members, and its weight caused the detachment. None of them had safety equipment, such as the modern Arva or “airbag” mountaineering that, in case of an avalanche, allow to stand to “float” on the snow. The huge white mass came down suddenly, overwhelming the young man, his father and another brother. The third remained unharmed.
Within minutes came with helicopters men of the Forest Service, the Suem 118, those of the mountain rescue, while in the area there were already the Guardia di Finanza. The father and one of the children were able to get to safety, reporting only some injuries. The 24 year old is rather out of sight of others. Sticking only one ski. So there initially focused research, which took part with the minutes passed nearly a hundred people. With the help of six dogs of Forestry the avalanche was beaten every inch, without success.
Then, by helicopter from Sapphire, arrived with another instructor dog most experienced of the Forest, ” Dik “, and flair took him immediately to a precise point of avalanche: under a meter of snow and 80 was the body of the missing. Each maneuver was attempted resuscitation, to no avail. Too severe and prolonged state of hypothermia, which left no chance to the Dutch tourist. On the spot came later also the mother, remained motionless in front of the child. A tragic ending to a day of super-rescue work in the mountains.
Despite the avalanche alert, sunny day on the slopes of the Dolomites had attracted thousands of skiers and ski mountaineers. In the ski area Faloria above Cortina d’Ampezzo, in the morning had come down well 4 avalanches. But plant operators prudently chose to immediately close the tracks to avoid risks. Just Faloria were working to clean up landslides teams of Forestry and Mountain Rescue, which then are moved to the area Giau. A 17 year old boy died instead skiing off-piste on the ski slopes of the Brocon step, in eastern Trentino. Speakers 118 helicopter, ambulance and a number of service vehicles of the slopes, but for the boy, 17, relief efforts were in vain.
