Sergio Mattarella swears today at 10 in front of the Montecitorio joint session, thus assuming the functions of head of state.
But in the last day in his office of constitutional judge has already worked all day as president of the Republic. Not only because it has developed the inaugural speech that will speak this morning. But also because – flanked by the staff of the Quirinale – has “studied” the dossier for the first official meeting of his seven: one with the new premier greek Alexis Tsipras, visiting Rome today.
The farewell by the Constitutional Court took place in an atmosphere of friendly, festive, exceptionality. It had never happened in history that a court were to, say, cross the square and move into the Quirinal Palace. In the early days of the Republic, Enrico De Nicola was head of state and later the first president of the Court. That happened was the reverse path. The board room in which “the Court is not in session court took note of the note, with whom the president-elect, Professor Sergio Mattarella, announced that he can no longer perform the functions of constitutional judge, following his election “was held to 19. After some refreshments for the greeting to the other judges. Mattarella was – tell – “radiant and deeply moved.” He said, a bit ‘kidding, a little’ seriously: “Just now I had begun to learn the job of a judge ….” Another sign of exceptionality: all thirteen judges (there is a place still empty, over Mattarella which leaves) were invited to attend the morning session of the House settlement. Even this had never happened.
At 13 yesterday in the Salone del Belvedere , the fifth floor of the building (which offers a breathtaking view of Rome) Mattarella met with the staff of the consultation, about three hundred people (officials, staff, assistants of judges), who wanted to greet one by one. They turned with a joke: “I’m sorry that the President of the Republic, once ended his service, is not destined to become a constitutional judge, because I would have liked to return to stay at Court, here I found myself very well and I worked well with all of you. ” But somehow it was satisfied because the court awarded him the title of constitutional judge emeritus.
The President had lunch in the refreshment , as it has done in the last three years, appreciating the food and health. Yesterday the menu, prepared by chef (yes, a woman), who is responsible for the catering, provided a choice a little ‘richer than usual with the possibility to choose between soups, and three varieties of pasta (fusilli with eggplant, celery and artichoke flan and broccoli in cheese sauce) and second strips of veal or spinach omelette, three types of side dishes, salad, three kinds of sweets and coffee.
The Panda gray Mattarella had arrived at the Palace yesterday morning from the nearby guesthouse at 9am, breaking down a one-hour break at home in mid-afternoon, around 16:20. Ten at night had not yet come back.
Later in the day there was an intermission so to speak ‘Franciscan’. The spokesman of the Basilica of Assisi, Father Enzo Fortunato, did not think twice about it to appear in person at the reception of the Council for handing off the ushers, a little ‘surprise, a bag of wishes to the President containing also the magazine “St. Francis. ”
