Vandals in action at the Colosseum Written “death” on a pillar – Corriere della Sera

it was Not enough for the raid night two brazilians who have climbed over the railing to get to the Colosseum: in the night between Sunday and Monday, at 2.30, on one of the pillars outside of the Amphitheatre Flavio, on the side of the metro B, were found two tag vandalism written with black paint: “Balto” and “Death”. The discovery took place while the agents of the commissioner Celio and a steering wheel were to intervene, on the recommendation of the 118, after which the two brazilians were introduced to the interior of the monument. The stunt – not the first time that foreign tourists sneak inside the Coliseum – has cost dear to two thirty-year-old: dropped from a height of four metres, risking their lives. One of the two reported fractured pelvis and was admitted to the San Giovanni, the other fared with bruises. Both have been sued for invasion of the bui lding. Waiting to understand if the two events – the blitz of the night, and the written vandalism – are connected, investigators are examining the footage of surveillance cameras.

The elephant in piazza della Minerva

As it happened, in a particularly delicate moment in terms of security, raises the issue of the protection of monuments. Possible that, in spite of the maxi-deployment of forces of the order, the two brazilians have acted undisturbed? And that nobody has realized of the written? The fragility of the historical-artistic heritage is again at the centre of controversy last November 14, when it was broken a tusk on the elephant of Bernini in the piazza della Minerva. And though, the cameras installed in the area (among others, those of the Senate) has not yet emerged any element useful to identify who is responsible. Fang, meanwhile, was a go-around, but the problem remains open: how to defend the “great beauty” of Rome?

incoming new alarm hyper-technological anti-vandals

After the episode on piazza della Minerva there were those who sought to protect it with a gate (the same solution proposed for the steps of Trinità dei Monti, returned to the place of bivouac, immediately after the restoration), but the councillor for Culture, Luca Bergamo has always said that contrary to the idea of reinforcing the monuments with fences that were made seem to be relegated in a sort of zoo. In the meantime, after yet another incursion inside of the Flavian Amphitheatre, the superintendence for archaeological Heritage of Rome has said that it is to enter a new alarm system hyper-technological anti-vandals. The device, among other things, should not shoot at moving animals, such as cats or gulls, who wander daily to the inside of the Colosseum.

study a “red zone” around the Flavian Amphitheatre

“We are evaluating the possibility of creating an area, so to speak, not free access, to a red area, – explained the supervisor, Francesco Prosperetti – . An area separate from the physical systems or fences, but by bollards as a ch along the perimeter, within which it will be installed a cctv system. The red zone will be the size of the original area of the Colosseum in roman times, in a radius of about fifteen feet. Obviously it is a hypothesis to be verified with the municipality of Rome with which we have opened by the time the table work also on many other themes, such as the Fori Imperiali”. Hoping that “episodes of this kind does not happen again”, Prosperetti has also asked the Prefecture to hold a meeting with the co-ordination of the forces which guarantee the surveillance of the piazza del Colosseo, the army, the police and carabinieri”.

The minister Franceschini: “more severe punishment”

On the event in the evening was also attended by the minister of cultural Heritage, Dario Franceschini, to condemn the act of vandalism is described as “a true insult to a monument that is the symbol of the world cultural heritage”. The head of the Mibact has also insisted on the necessity of more severe penalties for those who commit similar gestures, as provided for by the draft proxy law approved last December 23 by the government that it introduces, among other things, the specific types of offence for the disfigurement, damage to and soiling of cultural heritage and landscape”.
