Harvard World Model United in 2016 in Rome: if we think the UN? – The Western

It ‘s all very “cool” to WorldMUN, the Model United Nations, the “Olympics” of the UN, as they call the organizers, simulating an assembly of the United Nations, trying to imagine scenarios for sustainable development as they are making the young people gathered in Rome until next Friday. The event is also gone the prime minister, Matteo Renzi, while a student delegation will be hosted by Pope Francis. But in practice it’s getting to WorldMUN?

3,000 students arrived in Rome from all over the world to participate in this event organized by the Harvard World Model United Nations at Harvard University in collaboration with the Italian Association United Network , with weight as sponsors Metaenergia, Finmeccanica, SIAE, the studies La Sapienza university, Coldiretti Lazio. The boys mimic the works of twenty of Commissions of the United Nations, international organizations and government bodies, discussing scenarios of wars, economic crises, climate change and environmental issues, health emergencies, and more.

In the sessions daily, delegates take on the role of ambassadors and hold public speeches, prepare drafts of resolutions, resolve conflicts through the use of the procedural rules of the United Nations. Harvard WorldMUN dates back to 1992, took place for the first time in Miedzyzdroje (Poland), with the aim to bring together future leaders to let them imagine a world order following the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

“the theme of this year’s conference, # Future25, will push the delegates to learn from the past to reshape the future of politics and humanity,” says Joseph P. Hall, while Renzi has earned a standing ovation of the young delegates during his speech when he repeated the slogan dear to the premier “one euro in culture for each euro invested in security” and terrorism. “The day after the massacre of the Bataclan,” said the premier, “I proposed to allocate EUR to culture for every euro allocated to safety. Never give up on what makes our largest life worth living: the beauty of ‘art of culture, education, life together. “

” I think that connectivity is a prerequisite for politics today, especially in relation to the anti-anti-everything and everyone, “populism then added the premier. “In view of the elections in Germany. The effort to understand the problems and seek solutions has been replaced by the identity claims. The only way to win populism is to respond with transparency and involving citizens in the institutions. That is why your role today is especially important today. “

we said, all very cool, let’s get together and discuss and do, and we try to imagine a more peaceful and sustainable than that traversed by wars, conflicts and mass migration that we have today before to the eyes. Just a suggestion though, since there is still a few days at the end of the work. Among the students participating in the 2016 WorldMUN anyone critically arises the question of what is the UN today? About why you can never solve any of the major problems raised by the delegates? On why within the United Nations to play children and stepchildren, think of the treatment often reserved only true democracy in the Middle East, Israel?

In short, it’s fine culture, sustainable development, the standing ovation for Renzi, but you can re-think the UN system model and how?
