Land of fires, the committee victims: “Eight children dead in 20 days” – The Messenger

Eight children aged between 7 months and 11 years of age deaths from cancer in the last twenty days in the towns of the Land of fires, in naples. The dramatic denunciation comes from the mothers participating in the committee, the Victims of the Earth of the fuochì, today protested in front of the Prefecture of Naples, where there was a meeting about Bagnoli with the minister for the south as a de Vincenti. “These children, they said the mothers of the Committee – not rest never in peace. For them there is no justice”. A complaint that seems to confirm the data already published by the Istituto superiore di sanità (Iss) in 2016, a document which pointed to an “excess” of cancers among childr en in the Land of fireworks already at the age of one year.

The data is contained in the last update of the project Paths (National Epidemiologic Study of the Territories and Settlements Exposed to Risk of Pollution), dating back to 2016, the 55 Municipalities of the Land of Fires”, prepared by the Iss. The Report covers 32 Municipalities of the Province of Naples and 23 in the Province of Caserta and the confirmation that in these areas – notorious for the illegal disposal of waste – you will die more, record more hospitalizations, and you get sick much more of the tumor. And the alarm concerns in the first place the children already in the first year of life are affected from various types of cancer much more frequently than the average.

The disorders covered by the study have been investigated using three indicators: mortality, hospital admissions (available to all 55 Municipalities in examination) and in the incidence of tumors (available for 17 Municipalities in the Province of Naples, those served by the Cancer Registry). The overall mortality “is in excess – we read in the Report – compared to the regional average, in both groups of Common, both among men and among women”. Various types of cancer for which there is a greater risk in these areas: malignant tumor of the stomach, liver, lung, bladder, pancreatic, kidney and breast cancer. But the alarm first, the small: “an Excess of children hospitalized in the first year of life for all cancers and excesses of cancers of the central nervous System in the first year of life and in the age group 0-14 years,” says the Iss talking about ‘framework in the semifinals – were observed in both the provinces of Naples and Caserta.

And again: the Iss also pointed out “a high prevalence at birth of congenital malformations in areas characterized by the presence of sites of illegal disposal of hazardous waste”. Another relevant aspect in relation to the health of children, notes the Institute, is, however, also the socio-economic deprivation, with children living in poor areas that are the most vulnerable. A critical situation which requires you to run to the shelters. The results of the plan of epidemiological surveillance have shown a “load of disease in the area under examination, for which exposures to the emissions and releases of waste disposal sites and incineration illegal waste may have played a causal role or concausale”. Hence the need, noted the Iss,”implementation of the environmental remediation and the immediate cessation of the illegal practices of the disposal and combustion of waste with the recovery of the legality of the “cycle of waste”.
