The letter of 600 university teachers to the government: “Many students write poorly, you give” – The Republic

The letter of the 600 academics in the government: "Many students write badly, you are acting"“Many students write poorly in Italian, need urgent interventions”. And’ the content of the letter that more than 600 university professors, the Crusca academicians, historians, philosophers, sociologists and economists have conveyed to the government and to parliament to ask for “urgent action” to remedy the deficiencies of their students: “it Is now clear for ma ny years that at the end of the path to school too many young people write bad in Italian, read a little, and struggle to express themselves orally,” read the document departed from the group in Florence for the school of merit and responsibility, and signed by, among others, by Ilvo Diamonds, Massimo Cacciari, Carlo Fusaro, and Paola Mastrocola.

“for a long time – continues the letter – the university professors are denouncing the linguistic deficiencies of their students (grammar, syntax, vocabulary), with errors as soon as tolerable in the third grade. In an attempt to remedy this, some faculty have even activated courses of Italian language”. According to the teachers, the school system does not respond properly, “because the topic of the correctness of spelling and grammar has long been devalued on the floor teaching”.

“There are some important initiatives aimed at the training of teachers, but – please note – I do not see a political will, adequate to the gravity of the problem. Instead, we need a school really demanding in the control of learning, as well as the most effective in teaching, otherwise neither the commitment of the teachers, nor the acquisition of new methodologies will be enough.” In the letter, then a series of detailed lines of action for coming, “at the end of the first cycle of studies, to a “sufficient possession of the linguistic instruments of the basis of the great majority of students.”
